Most integral and attached garage conversions in Hampshire do not require planning permission — they are typically Permitted Development as long as the external appearance of the dwelling is not materially altered. However, if you're changing the use of a detached garage, altering the frontage significantly, or the property is in a conservation area, planning permission may be required. Some Hampshire properties also have conditions attached to their original planning approval requiring a garage to remain as a garage. We check all relevant constraints during every complimentary consultation.
Yes — unlike planning permission, building regulations approval is almost always required for a garage conversion in Hampshire. The converted space needs to meet current building regulations for habitable use, including floor insulation, wall and roof insulation, fire safety, structural adequacy, ventilation and electrical safety. We prepare full building regulations drawings that your local Hampshire building control authority can approve.
Our fixed design fees are: Pre-Build Package from £1,950 + VAT (building regulations drawings — most common for garage conversions that don't need planning permission), and Premium Plus from £4,950 + VAT (full service). Build costs — paid to your contractor — typically run £800–£1,500 per m² for a standard garage conversion, making it the most cost-effective way to add a room in Hampshire.
We cover the whole of Hampshire including Winchester, Southampton, Basingstoke, Andover, Fareham, Eastleigh, Romsey, Alton, Fleet, Farnborough and Petersfield. We also work across the Hampshire borders into Surrey, West Sussex, Berkshire and Wiltshire.
The most popular uses we design in Hampshire are: home offices (working from home has made these enormously popular), playrooms and family rooms, additional bedrooms and en suites, home gyms and hobby rooms, and granny annexes. The right use depends on the garage's size, orientation and what the household needs. We'll discuss options during your complimentary consultation.
